It all started with a production plant on Kibbutz Shamir in Israel’s northern Galilee. Established as a manufacturer of bifocals to provide employment options other than agriculture, the small farming community was soon transformed into a thriving modern workplace.

Today Shamir operates on every continent, in 23 countries, with 19 manufacturing labs stretching from North America to Japan, and we continue to grow in cooperation with leading international players.

In another new cooperative effort, this time with NASA, Shamir is conducting research in space to provide innovative solutions for presbyopia.
- Protecting our planet
Sustainability is an integral part of Shamir’s strategy. This entails mapping out a detailed plan for energy saving and ensuring our infrastructure and practices are as green as we can make them, such as eliminating use of disposable
s and favoring environment-friendly materials. Metaform™, our latest lens manufacturing breakthrough, is a nano-technology that is 80% more energy efficient than existing traditional methods.
- Giving back to society
Wherever Shamir is around the world, it has been keenly aware of its surroundings, offering support such as free eye examinations, joining charity marathons, or supporting the needs of schoolchildren. Recently, Shamir Portugal established a Mobile Lab housed in a converted truck, to serve retirement homes, providing residents with eye examinations, optical products, and helping them maintain visual health. In Israel, hospital medical staff in the northern city of Tzfat was presented with 100 pairs of prescription eyeglasses with Shamir Anti-Fog™ lens coating, to help them cope while wearing masks during the height of the Corona crisis.
