Step into the Future with Shamir, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence/
It’s not sci-fi, it’s real. The future of eyecare is here!
We’ve all seen science fiction movies or read books where computers and machines have learned to imitate the way people think and behave; and we’ve heard about researchers and scientists trying to “teach” computers and machines to learn things on their own like humans do. Also known as artificial intelligence (AI), these scenarios have become a reality and are revolutionizing every aspect of our lives. |
But what exactly is artificial intelligence?Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field that makes it possible for machines to analyze large amounts of data and recognize patterns in this data, learn and improve from experience, and perform human-like tasks. |
How is AI revolutionizing our lives?AI is used in almost every industry, from health care, to transportation, retail, finance, banking, manufacturing, science, and more; and we encounter it in almost everything we do – whether we realize it or not. Every time we book a trip online, use Netflix or Siri, get a product recommendation on Amazon, open Facebook, or search for something on Google, AI algorithms are working in the background. Here are some examples of AI-driven projects that are bringing us closer and closer to a future we could never have imagined just a few years ago: • Self-driving cars – Also known as driverless or autonomous cars, these vehicles use AI to perceive their surroundings and “understand” when to perform functions such as braking, changing lanes, navigating, and more. This enables them to drive with little or no human intervention. |

• Microsoft “Hanover” – Microsoft is bringing biomedicine and computer science together in a project called “Hanover”, which uses algorithms to help predict which drug combinations are most effective for cancer patients and to personalize treatments per patient based on this information. • Software robots for financial processes – Robotic process automation (RPA) uses software robots to automate repetitive tasks that are usually handled by human employees. It is already being used extensively in finance to perform tasks such as transaction processing, fraud detection, credit scoring, compliance monitoring, and auditing. |
Shamir brings AI and Big Data to the optics market! At Shamir, we realized the huge potential of embracing Big Data and AI to empower our employees and enhance the experience of our customers. We believe that like many other fields benefiting from the AI revolution, the optics and eyecare industry has everything to gain from leveraging AI. For this reason, we decided to adopt AI technologies to optimize our design, manufacture, operational, marketing, and sales processes. One of our first major projects involved an extensive research project using these methods. The idea was to analyze the visual behavior of presbyopes between the ages of 40 and 80 in order to offer a range of progressive lenses that meet their varied visual needs. In other words, the goal was to replace the “one size fits all” model with a more intelligent model that takes the diverse lifestyles and visual needs of presbyopes into account. Using a large database with data from 5 million progressive lens orders over the last few years, Shamir analyzed visual needs, which are defined by the lifestyles and daily activities of the presbyopes, including driving, reading, and use of smartphones. This information was correlated with an analysis of different visual zones and Visual Age™, which is the physiological age of the eye and is generally correlated with the patient’s chronological age. The research revealed that… This integrated approach led to the development of Shamir Autograph Intelligence™, which includes 12 different design concepts that provide an optimal vision solution for young, mid, and advanced presbyopes. Whether your patients are 45 or 65, they can now receive the best design optimally suited to their visual needs and Visual Age™. |
