From the way we interact with online media to self-driving vehicles, there seems to be no limit to the amazing progress that has occurred across a wide array of industries. But one of the most exciting of these has to be the recent developments in the eyecare industry. 


Now, as eyecare professionals, we may have a tendency to worry about our own job security — as technological developments have shown to make many seemingly legacy positions obsolete. But in our industry, new advances in AI technology actually work alongside the eyecare professional, rather than in competition with their expertise. These exciting developments allow us to offer better care, more precise diagnoses, and improved results all around. So let’s take a look at some ways in which AI is revolutionizing the eyecare industry for the better. 


Patient Screening

When screening patients for diabetic macular edema or diabetic retinopathy, many eyecare professionals faced an uphill battle due to having limited screening resources at their disposal. But AI technology has changed the game entirely, helping professionals reduce screening times down to split seconds, often with a much higher degree of accuracy and precision. This has cut down wait times for patients, and allowed for opthamologists to see many more patients than ever before. This has had a tertiary effect also, with this reduced window of time giving eyecare professionals the ability to act quicker in the treatment of the disease, lessening the degeneration. 


Research Techniques

One of the most powerful effects that AI has bestowed on the eyecare industry is in the ever-advancing field of clinical research. For conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, researches require the use of patient photography to search for commonalities among representative populations. But with AI technology, researchers can process images in an exponentially faster and more accurate way, thanks to constantly developing algorithms.  


Providing Greater Accessibility

For decades, proper eye care has been somewhat limited by obstacles in accessibility — including patients in older age groups, those who lived in rural communities, and people with financial constraints. But with advancements in AI technology, much of the work being done has allowed for a reduction in costs faced by providers, as well as easing restrictions due to lack of resources. Now, those in these disadvantaged populations have more access to professional optical and ophthalmological services than ever before. 


The immense role that Artificial Intelligence has played throughout the eyecare industry cannot be overstated. These developments are not to be feared however, but celebrated. When you embrace these changing technologies, and incorporate them into your practice, the benefits to your organization, and your patients, will be endless.
